Abersoch’s Rob Riddell Requests The Pleasure …

2016, Abersoch’s SCYC Host BDA Dragon Northern Championship & Edinburgh Cup

Racing starts Sunday July 3rd, last race is Friday July 8th

Question?   Why should the planned 2016 event be any different from all the other Dragon events? You turn up, register, launch ye’ boat, sail it, have a few laughs, hope the weather is OK, go home.

Answer:  The people!

In 2011 Abersoch’s SCYC was privileged to host what turned out to be a blistering battle between 43 teams from England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Russia, with fabulous representation from countries including Japan, Australia, and the US of A.

In 2011 The Irish arrived on our shores in numbers, with intent – intent to have a fabulous time ashore, to meet old friends, to celebrate life, and to win the championship. As the skipper of KIN reminded me at the start of the 2011 event, ‘Rob, we have not come here just to make up the numbers’. And what a memorable Irish result – Simon Brien’s Belfast based Team Kin walked off with the Edinburgh Cup Corinthian Trophy, and Martin Byrne’s Dun Laoghaire based Team Jaguar lifted the Edinburgh Cup…….I know there were joyous celebrations when their six teams all piled onto the ferry for their trip home.

OK, now it’s 2016, and there is a feeling that this Championship may well be the closest fought and hardest to win for many a year. Julia Bailey’s Aimee will be ‘odds on’ to continue their terrifyingly consistent performance with a second consecutive win, Mike Budd is no slouch on Harry – competing on home waters, Martin Byrne’s Jaguar will be back to do it all again, Andrew Craig’s Chimera crew know how to sail a boat……..and Tim Tavenor will be here with his little friend Mr Smith. I genuinely do not think for one minute Tim will be here just to make up the numbers either!

So what’s in store for those who elect to spend a week in the stunning Tremadog Bay, with the Snowdonia National Park back drop that is Abersoch?

  • A fabulously fun crowd of people
  • A collection of absolute top quality sailing competitors brought together to do battle
  • Compelling competition throughout the whole fleet
  • A conundrum, will Ireland do it again, will Wales win, will England stand supreme……?
  • A cleansing ale or two, a glass of something fizzy, and a lorry load of leg pulling and laughs as the ‘if only’ scenarios are carefully mis-engineered to prove a pointless point.

The Abersoch fleet look forward to welcoming you all with open arms, a hug, a hand shake and a big grin – it’s the people what make the difference!

See you there!

Rob Riddell
Abersoch Dragon Fleet Captain
