It was champagne sailing all the way for the 32 strong fleet on the opening day of the International Dragon UK Northern Area Championship in Abersoch today. With three races and three different race winners it was an exciting day on the water with a nice steady 10 knot breeze from the south west giving everyone a great start to the week.
Mark Dicker in GBR610 Rackham leads the fleet at the half way stage in the Northerns thanks to a 2, 1, 2 scoreline. The opening race was won by Lawrie Smith in GBR801 Alfie who went on to add a fifth and seventh to their scoreline putting them into third overall on thirteen points. Grant Gordon won the final race which, when added to his third and second in the earlier races, put him a single point behind Dicker and seven points ahead of Smith. Jonathan Brown in GBR770 Storm lies in fourth on seventeen points, a single point ahead of Gavia Wilkinson-Cox in GBR761 Jerboa.
With three more races to sail tomorrow to complete the Northern Championship the competition remains wide open. Tomorrow’s forecast is for stronger winds of 15 to 20+ knots and rain after lunch.
The Edinburgh Cup gets underway on Tuesday and continues until Friday. A number of additional crews will join the fleet for the main event so stay tuned for further news.
